Why some holidays move in 2027
When a federal holiday lands on a Saturday, federal workers get the Friday before off. When it lands on a Sunday, they get the Monday after. In 2027 this happens three times:
- Juneteenth (June 19) is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, June 18.
- Independence Day (July 4) is a Sunday, so it is observed on Monday, July 5.
- Christmas Day (December 25) is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, December 24.
New Year’s Day 2028 also falls on a Saturday, which means it is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. Strictly that is a 12th day off inside calendar year 2027, so some employers count 249 working days. Our table counts it with 2028, where the holiday belongs.
Private employers are different
Federal holidays are only binding for federal employees. Many private companies close for fewer days (often New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas) and some add the day after Thanksgiving. If your company follows that shorter list, you have more working days than the table shows. Check your own holiday calendar and adjust.
