Is 30 Days the Same as 1 Month? Only About a Third of the Time

People use “30 days” and “a month” as if they mean the same thing. They usually do not. We checked every day of 2027 as a start date, and 30 days later matched 1 month later on only 125 of 365 days (34%).

Key facts

  • 30 days and 1 month give the same date only 34% of the time.
  • After a 31-day month, 30 days falls one day short of the month.
  • In late January and February, 30 days runs past the month, by up to 2 days in a normal year.

The test

For each start date in 2027 we worked out two answers: the date 30 days later, and the date one calendar month later (same day number in the next month, or the last day of that month if the day does not exist). Then we compared them.

  • Same date: 125 start dates
  • 30 days lands 1 day earlier than 1 month: 210 start dates
  • 30 days lands 1 or 2 days later than 1 month: 30 start dates

In leap year 2028 the split is almost the same: 125 matches out of 366.

Examples from the 15th of each month

Start 30 days later 1 month later Difference
Jan 15 Feb 14 Feb 15 1 day earlier
Feb 15 Mar 17 Mar 15 2 days later
Mar 15 Apr 14 Apr 15 1 day earlier
Apr 15 May 15 May 15 same day
May 15 Jun 14 Jun 15 1 day earlier
Jun 15 Jul 15 Jul 15 same day
Jul 15 Aug 14 Aug 15 1 day earlier
Aug 15 Sep 14 Sep 15 1 day earlier
Sep 15 Oct 15 Oct 15 same day
Oct 15 Nov 14 Nov 15 1 day earlier
Nov 15 Dec 15 Dec 15 same day
Dec 15 Jan 14 Jan 15 1 day earlier

The pattern is simple: if the month you start in has 31 days, 30 days ends a day early. If it has 30 days, they match. February, with 28 days, pushes 30 days two days past the month.

Why it matters

Return windows, notice periods, free trials and payment terms are written either way. A “30-day” return window that starts on March 15 ends April 14, while a “one month” window ends April 15. If the wording says days, count days. Our 30 days from today and 1 month from today pages show both answers side by side, and the days between dates calculator handles any two dates.

How we add months

When the target month is shorter, we use its last day: one month after January 31 is February 28 (or 29 in a leap year). This is the same rule spreadsheets and most programming languages use. More detail is on our how it works page.
