How the dates are set
Most anniversary days are on the Monday closest to the founding date. Auckland’s is the Monday nearest January 29, Wellington’s the Monday nearest January 22, Nelson’s the Monday nearest February 1, Otago’s the Monday nearest March 23 and Westland’s the Monday nearest December 1. Taranaki uses the second Monday of March, South Canterbury the fourth Monday of September, Hawke’s Bay the Friday before Labour Day and Marlborough the Monday after it. Some councils and employers pick a different day, so check locally if it matters.
National holidays are Mondayised
When a national public holiday falls on a weekend and you would not normally work that day, it moves to the next working day. In 2027, 2 January moves to Monday, January 4; Waitangi Day moves to Monday, February 8; and Anzac Day to Monday, April 26. See the New Zealand 2027 list or pick your region.
