Why the weekday shifts every year
A normal year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one day. So any fixed date, like December 25, moves forward one weekday from one year to the next. A leap year has 366 days, so a date after February 29 moves forward two weekdays. That is why Christmas skips Sunday in 2028: it goes from Saturday in 2027 straight to Monday.
Holidays defined by a weekday rule never move off their weekday. US Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November, so only its date changes, between November 22 and November 28. Easter follows the moon and can fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25.
When Christmas falls on a weekend
In 2027 Christmas is on a Saturday. US federal workers then get Friday, December 24 off instead, and many employers do the same. In 2032 Christmas is again on a Saturday, and in 2033 it is on a Sunday, which moves the federal day off to Monday, December 26.
